Becoming a Councillor
In May 2027 local council elections will take place in our area. There are two “types” of councillor representing your community.
District Councillors
These citizens are elected to serve on the North Somerset Council and represent our larger local (District) area – Kingston Seymour, Kenn, Yatton and Claverham. There are TWO “seats” available and the current incumbents are Wendy Griggs and Steve Bridger.
North Somerset Council is organising two “Be a Councillor” events to provide information and guidance for anyone considering standing for these roles.
The sessions will help attendees understand:
- What it’s like to be a district councillor
- How decisions are made
- The expected time commitment
- What candidates need to do to stand for election
- How councillors can make a difference in their communities.
The events will take place on:
Thursday 8 October, 6.30pm to 8pm online via Microsoft Teams
Saturday 14 November, 11am to 12.30pm Weston-super-Mare Town Hall
(with optional networking until 1pm).
The sessions will be chaired by our Chief Executive Mandy Bishop and will feature councillors from across North Somerset Council’s political groups, together with a representative from the Local Government Association.
Places on these sessions can be booked via the following external links:

Parish Councillors
There will also be an election in May 2027 for the SEVEN seats on the Kingston Seymour Parish Council.
If you would like to know more about this role, please talk to one of your existing councillors or to me. More information about how to take part in the election will become available in early 2027.
