Local Government Boundary Commission – Consultation

Periodically – around every 10 years – an independent Government Commission checks on the number of councillors that attend the district governing body – in our case, North Somerset Council – and the areas of the district that they provide support for.
This is about our DISTRICT councillors – currently Wendy Griggs and Steve Bridger – who look after us, Kenn and Yatton. It is not about your elected PARISH council.
It has already been decided that the 50 seats for DISTRICT councillors at NSC will remain the same, so the review will concentrate on ensuring that the representatives have roughly the same number of citizens to represent and will look at:
- the number of wards;
- the number of councillors representing each ward;
- ward boundaries; and
- the names of wards.
Our two existing councillors will have seen a growth in the number of citizens they look after – because of the growth in housing in Yatton – but this is no different to many other areas across the District.
In drawing up new electoral wards, the review team must balance three legal criteria, namely:
- to deliver electoral equality: where each councillor represents roughly the same number of electors as others across the unitary authority;
- that the pattern of wards should, as far as possible, reflect the interests and identities of local communities;
- that the electoral arrangements should provide for effective and convenient local government.
They will treat all submissions equally, and judge each case on its merits and against the legal criteria.
If you wish to put forward a view, they urge you to ensure that evidence supports your submission.
For example, if you wish to argue that two areas should be included in the same electoral ward, make sure you tell us why they should be together, providing evidence about community facilities, ties, organisations, and amenities, rather than simply asserting that they belong together.
